VueScan does a good job, but has one of the worst user interfaces I’ve ever used figuring it out is difficult and scanning with it takes a few times longer than it should, so it’s my hope that this will help others trying to do the same thing.
Vuescan nikon coolscan 5000 software#
I’m using a Nikon Coolscan 5000, with VueScan software to do the scanning. I make no claim that this is the best of all possible approaches, or that I won’t figure out something better later, but it seems to work. But one thing that is certain is that I want to start with as faithful a representation of the film image as possible. The thing about color negatives is that there is no reference for what the image is “supposed” to look like: not only is the film a negative, it’s got the orange mask. It was time to sit down and figure out a better method. Thus far my approach to scanning color negatives has been to play with it until it looks reasonable. My creative work is how I support myself and my son. If you find it valuable, please donate through my Paypal button below. The knowledge that I am sharing took many years of study and practice to attain. Vuescan will scan all of the images in your list. until you are done with all of them.ħ: Click the SCAN button to do the final scans. Change the frame number to the next one you want to set up, then the next, etc. Set the cropping and other settings you want to use for the photo.Ħ: To see the other previews, and set the crop and other settings for them, go to the FRAME NUMBER box, under the BATCH LIST box. The scanner will make a preview scan of all of the frames you chose.ĥ: When all of the previews are done, Vuescan will display the last of the previews. Scanning Directionsġ: Insert the film holder into the scanner and wait for it to initialize.Ģ: Choose a mode from the BATCH SCAN menu.ģ: If you chose LIST, type the frames you want to scan into the BATCH LIST box.Ĥ: Click the PREVIEW button. So, frame 1 is the first frame in the holder, frame 2 is the second spot on the holder, etc. Note that frame numbers are the positions in the film holder, not the numbers printed on the film itself. To scan frames 1, 3, 4, and 5, for example, you would type 1-3-4-5 in the box. Type in a list of frame numbers, seperated by dashes. When LIST is selected, a BATCH LIST box appears.
